Surrounded by a barrier reef, the island has calm
turquoise waters, many deserted beaches and lush tropical vegitation.Development on North
Caicos has been carefully planned and controlled ensuring that the island will always
remain a tropical paradise. Unlike Provo, there are no high rise buildings or crowded
beaches. North Caicos has narrow yet excellent paved roads and public utilities exist
throughout the island. There is a small international airport with flights arriving daily.
A luxury marina is now under construction at Sandy Point. The North Caicos Yacht Club and
Marina will provide excellent facilities for sailing enthusiasts.
The climate on North Caicos can best be described as an eternal summer with trade winds
providing ocean breezes and nearly constant sunshine. The temperature rarely drops below
25° C (77° F) or rises above 31° C (88° F). North Caicos has a rainfall of about 40
inches per year and the vegetation is more lush than that of the neighboring islands.
North Caicos boasts the largest flock of Pink Flamingo in the islands. Ospreys make their
nests on the adjacent Three Mary Cays and there are a wide variety of other birds on the
islands extensive nature reserves and sanctuaries. Iguanas on the nearby East Bays Cays
are an outstanding example of the natural diversity of this green island.
For adventurous travelers, car and bicycle
rentals are available as well as taxis and guided tours. Excellent scuba diving and
snorkeling are available just off shore.
The island's rich history can still be seen by visiting Loyalist plantation ruins, the
grandest of which is Wades Green. Lucayan artifacts have been found in the caves near
Sandy Point and crafts such as straw-work are still practiced today.
The majority of the island's friendly 1400 residents live in the settlements of Bottle
Creek, Whitby and Kew. There are a number of large estates being built along the ocean and
the TCI's Chief Minister calls the island home.
